Nowadays, the world has become one big village through globalization. So there are high chances that people of different languages mingles at different places such as church conference, political meeting, wedding, gala, international meeting etc. So when people of different languages gather for one purpose, there is a need for an interpreter or translator to facilitate communication between those people. People communicate using different ways, it can be verbal communication or non-verbal communication. So if it is verbal, there is a need for an interpreter and if it is non-verbal (written form) there is a need for a translator. But then, in the process of interpreting/ translating there are guidelines that guides interpreter/translator. Those guidelines are code of conduct for translators and interpreters. A true profession always has its own rules and regulations to maintain standards for members within that profession, so code of conduct for translators and interpreters are important to an interpreter and translator in many ways. Some of the code of conducts for translators and interpreters are confidentiality, competence, reliability, accuracy, impartiality, role boundary, maintaining professional relationship and professional solidarity. So, these code of conducts for translators and interpreters they help translators and interpreters to anticipate and prevent certain behaviors, they also aid translators and interpreters to know their boundaries, they are also keystone to translators and interpreters, just to mention a few.
One of the code of conduct for translators and interpreters is impartiality. By being impartial, it means that translators and interpreters should serve all parties equally without expressing their opinions or sympathy or taking sides. This means that even if you are interpreting for enemy one should not take the other side so as to punish the enemy through wrong information. Hence code of conducts helps translators and interpreters to prevent certain behaviors such as being biased which led to taking sides and it helps them to observe impartiality.
Confidentiality is another guideline for translators and interpreters. By being confidential it means to keep all information acquired in translation confidential. One of the slogans of confidentiality is that, “what happens in veghars stays in veghars”. So this means that if one is translating political document, the information in that document should kept privacy and it should not be shared with other political parties. Hence code of conducts for translators and interpreters are important because they are their law/keystone which depend on so as to know what they should do and not do and so as not to disclose information but to maintain confidentiality because the code of conduct says so.
There is also accuracy. In general accuracy in translation means optional and complete message transfer from the source language into another language preserving the content and intent of the first language. One should be faithful and render exactly the idea and form of the original text. It can also be defined as ‘optimal and complete message transfer into the target language preserving the content and the intent of the source language or text without omission or distortion. Therefore, through the availability of the code of conducts the guideline information will be rendered exactly without omission, and addition. So, one can note that code of conducts is important because they help translators and interpreters to be accurate and faithful when doing their work.
So these are some of the code of conducts for translators and interpreters and they are important for both translators/ interpreters and clients. For translators/ interpreters they help them in doing their work effectively and for clients they know that their information is safe with translators and the information will be translated accurately.
