Translation is the rendition of information from the source language text into the target language text in a written form without distorting the intended meaning of the original text. It is also important to note that in translation the translator has ample time to research and contact experts on a field of research. Interpretation is the oral rendition of information from the source language text into the targeted language text. Interpreting happens in real time and this can be in simultaneous or consecutive.
Most people assume the role of translation and interpretation as simply being bilingual, however there is a lot to be done for one to perform translation and interpretation roles. One needs to have the following qualities, subject area knowledge, which is having an in depth knowledge on a specific field, socio-linguistic competence, is all about knowing the relationship between language and culture of a certain context, grammatical competence is knowing how to arrange words in a sentence, for example, the SVO, describes how words are arranged, there should be a subject, verb and an object, and also to have strategic competence, .when one encounters translation problems like linguistic untranslatability, cultural gaps, among others, the translator or interpreter must be in a way to navigate and find the way out.
Thus, this article will be an eye opener in the community that being bilingualism is not an attribute for one to become a good translator or an interpreter since translation and interpreting has some qualities that one must possess during the course of the work.
Translation and interpretation plays a vital role in the society because it caters for everyone in the community. Translation and Interpretation has enabled everyone to have access of information as postulated in the Zimbabwean Constitution. Sign language interpreting makes the deaf community to have access of information thereby promoting equality before the law. Thus translation and interpreting is seen as a funnel through which information passes from one language to another. Translation and Interpreting has enabled globalisation. The world has become one because translators and interpreters facilitates the swift flow of information between the two or more parties that might have a language barrier, hence translation and interpretation plays a vital cog in our societies or globally.
